NOTE: Images are large. Please allow time for your web browser to load.

There are currently as of August 27, 2012, 133 photo's on this page.

Four new photo's were added in August 2008 of my grandfather, William Benoit and my great-grandfather, Cleophas Benoit on my mother's side of the family. These photo's were given to me in August 2008 by my late uncle, Norman R. Benoit. Norman was the son of William Benoit and Alice (Dessert) Benoit and the grandson of Cleophas and Olive (Charpentier) Benoit.

Below are some early miscellaneous photo's I thought you might find interesting courtesy of myself, my cousins Felix "Buzz" Coutu III, Bruce Eastman and my uncle Norman Benoit. Additional photo's come from  various relatives and friends including myself of those pertaining to me.

I believe most of the people have been correctly identified in the photo's. If you think any of the captions are in error, please, DO NOT HESITATE to contact me and I will fix accordingly.

Please note the photo's are not in any particular order... it's like a "grab-bag" or a "smorgishbord".

SPECIAL BONUS! In addition to the photo's I thought I would include some Father & Son Cafe relics  (souvenirs). You'll find them near the bottom of this page. Presently there are 3... a combination bottle and can opener, a 1943 monthly calendar and a thermometer. About two-thirds the way down you will find a replica (3 photo's) of a Father & Son Cafe typical food menu.

If anyone has any additional "Father & son Cafe" relics, please forward to me and I will make sure they are added.

SO HERE WE GO AND I HOPE YOU ENJOY!

Turner Central Ice Cream Possibly Before Father & Son Restaurant
Photo appearing in the June 19 2008 edition of the Warwick Beacon. I have reason to believe Turner Central Ice Cream was never formerly the Father & Son Cafe. If you scroll down to the fourth photo below, you will notice the building was formerly occupied by the Home Restaurant which my grand father had purchased sometime in 1914. Also, most Apponaug historians believe, prior to the Home Restaurant, the building may have been previously occupied by some type of "Hay & Grain" establishment.

Please refer to the link titled "Father & Son Cafe" at the top of this page for more information on how the Father & Son Cafe came into existence.

Today, the Eastern Star Chinese Restaurant occupies the former Father & Son Cafe at 3301 Post Road in Apponaug, R.I. NOTE: There is a fourth sign (Turner Central Ice Cream) located on the right side and near the front of the building building as well but not depicted in this photograph.

A Photo of The Home Restaurant Before Father & Son Restaurant. Circa Late 1900's Or Early 1920's
A photo of the Home Restaurant which was soon to be the Father & Son Cafe. I believe the photo may have been taken in the middle to late teens or early 1920's. It is also believed the person on the right is my grand father Felix Coutu I. The person second from the left may be one of his sons, Roland, who was born in 1907. The remaining two people are unknown.

Interesting facts to note in this photo: 1. Post Office is to the left of the restaurant. 2. "Home  Restaurant" sign is on the right side of the building. 3. Note there are no buildings on the right side of the building as well.

The Father & Son Cafe was located at 3301 Post Road in Apponaug, R.I. from about 1914 to 1980.

Josiah Westcott House & Store
Josiah Westcott House and Store. (ca. 1832 and 1914), 3301 Post Road, Apponaug, RI

One of the older Apponaug buildings, the Westcott House is today a restaurant. It
was probably moved to this site from the south side of the street. In 1880, the
building became Blackmar's Store and a handsome porch was added.

Albertine Coutu purchased the building in 1914 and it became the Father and Sons
Restaurant for the next 60 years. Felix Coutu, Sr. drastically changed the appearance
of the building by bringing the front out to the width of the porch. He built a second story above this, removed the pitched roof, and added a "pent" roof below the
second story windows, and gave the building the appearance it has today.

Greenwood Bridge
It is believed the house on the left was owned by Smith Quimby according to the 1890 map. Then the house was later owned by the
Winter family.
Sometime in the 50's the property was demolished and was replaced with a Ford auto dealership. It became Baker Winter Ford, then Warwick Ford and finally Paul Bailey Ford.
Kimble Hardware store was located across the street. Longley's
Market (now Greenwood Liquor) was located on the next corner. (Courtesy: Dave Matteson).

Good view of the old bridge, and the Inn through the trees.

Here we see the street car tracks over the bridge. I wonder how much a BLT was then.

Lots of wires. The street car track will be gone soon.
